About

My name is Karen Rutherford. I am the single mother of one 17-year-old son. It has been just us for most of his life, and, therefore, he has been my best friend. He is the basis on which every decision is made. This isn't to say that I'm the greatest mother in the world, because some of those decisions have probably not been the best, but it is to say that no move is made without the first thought being him.

He has recently sprouted wings and will be flying away sooner than I ever thought possible. It began with...well, it first began at age 12, , but the most drastic changes have occurred since July 2006 when he got his driver's license. And now, less than a year later, we're discussing colleges, SATs, dorm living, etc.

All single mothers experience the panic of their children changing from 16, 17, 18, 19 years of age. But the ones who have no one, the ones that have lived in fear for years that the house of cards could fall at any minute, these are the ones to whom I want to reach out. Because I am this PSM "sufferer". I put the word in quotes, because it is certainly not comparable to the vast suffering throughout the world. But I do think PSM can be serious. I think it leads to depression and isolation and thoughts of unworthiness and suicide.

The sudden feeling of being not needed. The sudden feeling of having no purpose. The sudden feeling of having no friends. And typically, we're mid-life, which means we're also coping with spiritual quests, PMS, perimenopause, do we have enough college money, will we retire comfortably, what are we still doing in this cubicle, etc.

Forgive me, I'm PSMing....

So, in an effort to be bigger, to overcome, to beat it, to make it more tangible and manageable, I named it. And wrote a support manual. And created this website, which is a work in progress.
